Can hypnosis be harmful?
Who’s in control during the session and is there a danger you won’t come out of it? Well, consider this: Would a rose by any other name still smell as sweet?
Shakespeare? Seriously, Cheryle?
Yeah, I’m afraid so. Romeo and Juliet to be exact.
No, I’m not a Shakespeare fan. I’m more of a Dr. Who kinda girl. (Wanna fly in the TARDIS, anyone)?
But, I digress.
I’ve been struggling to understand why you’re afraid to consider hypnosis when you think about making some positive life-style changes. I’ve used it…like forever…and have been happy with my own results. I thought that everyone would want to know how to do it.
And..I was wrong! Gasp! Go get the dunce cap.
But…suddenly, it hit me! *Palm-smack to forehead*
You don’t like the Name!
Okay. I get it. Those old movies with the Freud-clone, dangling his pendulum in front of the patient’s eyes and “making” them go into trance, would be enough to scare the pants off anyone who had power and control issues. And as a result, they wake up and have no idea what they said or did?
Because…duh…“mind-control”…right? Like those military movies about “brainwashing”? No, thank you!
But, are you willing to work with Tarot cards, “mindset” or “meditation”, because you believe that you’re more in control with those techniques? Yet, every one of those techniques is merely a way to uncover the underlying beliefs you have about yourself.
Have you ever caught yourself day-dreaming? Or been in church, listening to the music, reciting the prayers and thinking about your life? Guess, what? You were in an altered state of consciousness, very similar to hypnosis.
…then again, those techniques don’t involve the dreaded: “hypnotic trance”. OMG!
Ahhhh…There’s the rub. (Oops, sorry! Shakespeare again. Lol)!
What’s that sound, you ask? That little “bang” you just heard?
Don’t’ worry. That’s just the sound of me hitting my head against the wall in frustration. No biggie. But, I find it especially relevant, that techniques and situations producing the same altered state of consciousness, are more acceptable to you than hypnosis.
So, what’s the answer? How can I help you get over your fear?
Hypnosis by any other name would work as well. (See what I did, there)? Would you still want roses from your husband on Valentine’s Day, if they were called ‘Boogles’ instead of roses? Wouldn’t they still smell the same and look as pretty? But all kidding aside…
Mindset, meditation and…yes…even Tarot cards, do the exact same things that hypnosis does. They stimulate your mind to look at your underlying beliefs, the ones that sabotage your efforts to kick a habit, lose weight, stop procrastinating and even start your own business.
The biggest difference is that you first use deep relaxation to get yourself into your best learning state. When you are extremely relaxed, your hidden beliefs are easier to recognize and so are the ways you can change them.
The fact is…you are always in complete control! The hypnotist can say things that help you relax, but you cannot force relaxation, itself. Let me explain further: In hypnotic trance:
- You hear every word that is being said (and yes, you are in trance)
- You can bring yourself out of trance at any time (because you allowed yourself to go there in the first place)
- The hypnotist cannot “make” you do anything that is against your ethical or moral values
- Most of all, the only suggestions you will follow are the ones that make sense to you and are for changes you really want
And, news flash! All hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis.
As much as you might believe differently, the bottom line is, you allow yourself to relax into your learning state (hypnotic trance). You are in control. The only difference is the deeper level of relaxation.
Well……and the name “hypnosis”. There is that!
So, here’s my fix: anyone mind if I start calling it “Mindset Mastery”?
Because, really, that’s what it is. The name “hypnosis” has gotten a bad rep. And because of that, you’re afraid it’s really mind control. But, in reality, you are taking charge of your mindset. You change what you want to change and keep what you don’t.
It’s just a name, my sweets.
After all…A rose by any other name…
Could still be hypnosis.
